Birdwatching at Muthurajawela Marsh from Colombo
Overview
Your tour starts at 6:30 AM with a pickup from your Colombo hotel, heading to Muthurajawela in Negombo, about an hour’s drive away. Enjoy a packed breakfast en route.
Muthurajawela, a 6,230-hectare wetland, is one of Sri Lanka’s top 12 priority wetlands, rich in biodiversity with nearly 200 plant species, 102 bird species, and a variety of fish, reptiles, mammals, and butterflies. Once prime rice fields, the area transformed into a unique coastal ecosystem after Dutch canal construction caused saltwater intrusion.
You’ll explore the sanctuary on foot and by boat, with your expert bird guide helping you spot species like herons, eagles, and cormorants. The tour ends at 10:30 AM, with drop-off at your hotel by noon.
