Coimbra Free Tour Must-See Places
Overview
We will visit the places that mark the character of the city. We will start at the Jardim Botânico da Universidade, a place full of history and curiosities. We continue to the University of Coimbra and the Paço das Escolas, where we will tell stories of black cloaks and academic traditions that are still part of university life.
We will pass by the elegant Sé Nova and the imposing Sé Velha, scenes of little known episodes that show the importance of the city over the centuries.
We will walk through the old town to the Almedina Tower and the Mosteiro de Santa Cruz, where the first kings of Portugal rest.
We will stroll through the Praça do Comércio, discover the Baixa and stop in front of Coimbra's Fado sculpture, symbol of its musical tradition.
We will finish by the river in the Parque Verde do Mondego, perfect to close the tour with open views, relaxed atmosphere and local tips to continue enjoying the city.

On arrival
Main entrance of the Jardim Botânico da Universidade de Coimbra, next to the Hen Gate and the sculpture by Félix de Avelar Brotero. Very visible from the street, ideal for meeting before starting the tour.
Things to note
Recommendations for participants:
- Wear comfortable shoes, as we will be walking through cobblestone streets and historic areas.
- Bring water and sunscreen, especially on sunny days.
- Although the tour is light, be prepared to walk between 2 and 2h30min.
- You can bring a camera or cell phone for photos; there will be several iconic spots to capture memories.
- Respect the historic spaces and do not climb on railings or structures.
- If you come in a group, arrive 5-10 minutes before the meeting point so as not to delay the start.
- Take advantage of the stops to rest and enjoy the views.
Remember that the tour is informal and fun, it is not necessary to know the history beforehand!
