The so-called “Consulate District,” facing the sea, with its mansions, fondouks, and Koranic schools, as well as morabito lodges and neo-Moorish mansions.
The Jewish mellah has narrow streets leading inland, with rooftops from which loggias and synagogues can be seen.
Tnaker is the name of the medina’s most working-class neighborhood, with its markets, guild alleys, bazaars, and a Berber mosque. The people there are still friendly toward foreigners, especially when they show an interest in their way of life.
