Overview
Bolzano is one of the most fascinating border cities in Europe. For thousands of years, merchants, pilgrims, and migrants crossed the Alps here, making the city a meeting point between north and south. But the same geography that brought wealth and opportunity also made South Tyrol one of the continent's most contested regions.
This walking tour follows Bolzano's story from the time of Ötzi through the medieval trading fairs, the Habsburg Empire, Italian unification, Fascist Italianisation and the Second World War, before ending with the remarkable autonomy model that transformed a once-divided region into one of Europe's most prosperous.
Highlights:
- Discover why Bolzano became one of the Alps' most important trading centres.
- Walk through the remarkably preserved medieval arcades of Laubengasse.
- Learn how language and identity have shaped everyday life for centuries.
- Explore the dramatic changes brought by Fascism in the 1920s.
- Understand the difficult choices faced by South Tyroleans during the Second World War.
- Discover how South Tyrol became an international model for minority rights and peaceful coexistence.
Distance: Approximately 2 km.

Things to note
The tour will focus on the history and the culture of the city, but we’ll not be visiting any churches - sorry!
