These cities were chosen for their strong relevance to international tourism and their ability to represent the broader national hospitality trends. While hotel prices can vary significantly between urban, rural, and resort areas, focusing on these central hubs allows for a fair comparison of what travelers can typically expect in each country.
To evaluate hotel value across different countries and regions, we developed a composite metric known as the Hotel Value Index, which balances key factors related to both pricing and quality. This index is designed to help travelers identify destinations that offer the best overall accommodation value, not just the cheapest rates, but also a strong combination of guest satisfaction and hotel availability.

Methodology
To ensure comparability across countries, this analysis is based on hotel pricing data from key representative cities within each region. For each country, we selected a major urban center or a popular tourist destination that reflects typical accommodation costs. The cities included in our dataset are: Barcelona (Spain), Dubai (UAE), Jakarta (Indonesia), Johannesburg (South Africa), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), London (England), Melbourne (Australia), Miami and New York (USA), Mumbai (India), Nairobi (Kenya), Paris (France), Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), and Tokyo (Japan).
These cities were chosen for their strong relevance to international tourism and their ability to represent the broader national hospitality trends. While hotel prices can vary significantly between urban, rural, and resort areas, focusing on these central hubs allows for a fair comparison of what travelers can typically expect in each country.
To evaluate hotel value across different countries and regions, we developed a composite metric known as the Hotel Value Index, which balances key factors related to both pricing and quality. This index is designed to help travelers identify destinations that offer the best overall accommodation value, not just the cheapest rates, but also a strong combination of guest satisfaction and hotel availability.
The calculation was based on five core indicators: the average hotel price, the maximum observed hotel price, the minimum available hotel price, the average guest review score, and the total number of hotels. These indicators capture both cost-efficiency and service expectations, allowing for a fair comparison across diverse destinations.
To ensure comparability, all values were normalized on a 0 to 1 scale using min-max normalization. For pricing indicators (average, maximum, and minimum hotel prices), lower values received higher scores, since affordability is considered favorable. In contrast, higher scores were awarded to countries with better guest reviews and a larger number of hotels, which suggests higher satisfaction and greater accommodation choice.
Each component was then weighted according to its relative importance in determining value. Average hotel price was given the greatest weight at 30 percent, as it reflects the typical nightly cost a traveler is likely to pay. Guest review scores were weighted at 25 percent to account for the overall experience. The remaining indicators (maximum price, minimum price, and number of hotels) were each assigned a 15 percent weight.
For the regional version of the index, we grouped countries into broader geographic zones such as Southeast Asia, Western Europe, and North America. The same normalization and weighting approach was used, with scores averaged across countries within each region.
This methodology allows for a transparent, data-driven ranking that balances affordability with quality and accessibility, offering valuable guidance for travelers making decisions about where to stay.
