Overview

Sonnenallee reflects Berlin's constant change like no other street. Once abruptly separated by the Berlin Wall, the former border district has now developed into a vibrant, multicultural melting pot. Where Arab cafés and start-ups characterize the streetscape, the "shorter end" of the avenue still reminds us of the literarily famous East German past.at the former border crossing, the route leads directly onto the Berlin Wall Trail. The heavily guarded death strip used to run along the green Heidekampgraben. Today, a peaceful green corridor connects the districts of Neukölln and Treptow. Information boards and memorials along the way are a vivid reminder of the fate of the division of Germany as you walk or run, and the path leads directly into the extensive Treptow Park, with the monumental Soviet memorial at its center. As the largest burial site of its kind in Germany, over 7,000 soldiers rest here. The huge, awe-inspiring site is dominated by the twelve-metre-high bronze statue of a soldier saving a child, while the nearby Spree Promenade offers a lively contrast.
