Overview
In the 17th century, a profound urban transformation of the medieval walled city of Avilés took place. The nobility and wealthy people ventured to build their homes outside the walled area. New streets were generated, creating the so-called Avilesian baroque expansion.
During this walk through the historic center of Avilés we will visit both its oldest streets and the baroque expansion. The porticoed street of Galiana will reveal some secrets starting with the origin of its name. We will cross the Ferrera Park, former private gardens of the Marquises of Ferrera and continue along Rivero, the longest and busiest pedestrian street of the town. We will contemplate emblematic buildings such as the parish church of San Nicolás de Bari and the medieval church of the Franciscan Fathers. Of later construction, we will see the house of Indianos de Arias de La Noceda and the Palacio Valdés theater.
We will enter one of the moments of greatest splendor of the town, when the nobility gave its greatest signs of power and connect with the more recent past, in which the booming bourgeoisie and the Indianos begin to occupy an increasingly important place in Aviles.
