Overview
Explore the town’s most important sites and discover its most historic and charming corners with a guide from Avilés. As Avilés grew, a profound urban transformation took place outside the city walls. The nobility and the wealthy began building their homes outside the medieval quarter. New streets were laid out, giving rise to a Baroque expansion.
During this walk through Avilés’s historic district, we’ll explore both its oldest streets and the Baroque expansion. The arcaded Calle de Galiana will reveal some of its secrets to us, and we’ll walk through Ferrera Park—the former private gardens of the Marquises of Ferrera—before continuing along Rivero, the town’s longest and busiest pedestrian street. We’ll admire iconic buildings such as the San Nicolás de Bari Parish Church and the medieval church of the Franciscan Fathers. Built later, we’ll see the Palacio Valdés Theater.
We’ll delve into one of the town’s most splendid periods, when the nobility displayed the greatest signs of their power, and we’ll connect with the more recent past, when the burgeoning bourgeoisie and the “Indianos” began to play an increasingly important role in Avilés.
