Overview
The tour starts at the oldest official building of Antwerp (Stone Castle), where in the same area, during the first centuries, probably a Roman camp was settled.
Around the 11th century, Stone Castle became the first stone building and fortress of Antwerp. In the 16th century, Antwerp became, thanks to its port, one of the world's most important cities. The wealth was reflected in the size and splendour of the buildings like the House of the Butchers and the Cathedral of Our Lady.
However, there was a downside to all this, which would lead at the end of the century to the decline: the religious wars. Flanders, being a Province of catholic Spain, came gradually under the influence of a new movement, the Protestants. That led to vicious wars and repression of Antwerp. With it came also the Spanish Inquisition.
In 1585, the Catholic Spain reimposed their rule, and a lot of people from Antwerp fled to Holland. This was the end of the Antwerp Golden Age.
This tour also covers storytelling, anecdotes, making your experiencing for a moment how it was to live in Antwerp.
