Overview
Debre Libanos Monastery and Portuguese Bridge: The monastery, northwest of Addis Ababa in the North Shewa Zone of Oromia, was founded in 1284 by Saint Tekle Haymanot as Debre Atsbo and renamed Debre Libanos in the 15th century. Nearby, the Portuguese Bridge, also called Sebara Dildiy, is a historic stone arch bridge. Often attributed to the Portuguese in the 16th century, it was likely built in the 17th century.
Adadi Maryam is a rock-hewn monolithic church about 66 km southwest of Addis Ababa, believed to date back to the 12th century. According to St. Lalibela’s hagiography, it was one of 76 rock-hewn churches he constructed, including those in the Lasta area.
Tiya Stelae, in central Ethiopia’s Gurage Zone, is an archaeological site famous for its large decorated stone pillars. Recognized as a World Heritage Site in 1980, these monolithic monuments are unique examples of Ethiopia’s ancient cultural heritage.
