Overview of the tour in Lake District

Kendal, known as 'The Gateway to the Lakes' and to locals as the 'Auld Grey Town' (due to being mostly built of traditional grey limestone), was named the 'Happiest place to live' in the North West, ranking 14th overall across Britain (Rightmove 2023 survey).

The town has a wonderful mix of history & culture, along with stunning views & countryside right on the doorstep. This walk experiences both!

We'll have a potter around the distinctive yards & alleys, discuss local legends surrounding our two castles, visit the post office which inspired Postman Pat, and discover the importance of the wool industry to our town (approx 30 mins at the beginning & end of the tour).

The 1 hour 30 mins in the middle is my favourite circular walk in Kendal - off-road through Castle Howe, Serpentine Woods & up to the viewpoints at Kendal Fell & the golf club, which offer spectacular views of the town & Lake District fells.

I'll also share my recommendations of places to eat, drink & visit in Kendal and the surrounding area.

We love living here & I would love to share with you my favourite spots & hidden gems!

This activity includes:

  • Kendal Parish Church
  • Abbot Hall
  • Brewery Arts
  • Postman Pat Plaque
  • Serpentine Woods
  • Wainwright's Yard
  • Kendal Town Hall
  • Town & country experiences and homemade hot chocolate!

Meeting point

Kendal coat of arms

On arrival

We'll be meeting near the Kendal coat of arms, by the information board in the photo attached. This is by Nether Bridge and opposite Youdells Art Shop.

Things to note

This walk is about 6.5km / 4 miles, through woodland & over fells, on paths which could be muddy & slippy, and as such walking boots or wellies are recommended. To gain the best views, there will be some steep ascents, the total ascent being about 380m. The Cumbrian weather can also be unpredictable, so the blue sky views aren't guaranteed, but an adventure is! :-)

Free Cancellation

You are free to cancel a booking anytime. We kindly remind you to cancel bookings you cannot arrive for. Being reported as absent decreases your customer level points and the benefits you can enjoy.
