Valparaiso – The city of surprises
Valparaiso in Chile is full of surprises: Here lies the country’s first public library, Latin America’s oldest stock exchange, the continent’s first volunteer fire department, and the headquarters of the oldest Spanish-language newpaper in circulation in the world, El Mercurio de Valparaíso. The city’s historic quarter was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2003 and for a long time it was called The Jewel of the Pacific as well as Little San Francisco, as many Europeans moved here.
