Béziers - The ancient city of bullfighting
Small in numbers, but big in history: Béziers, located in Southern France is one of the oldest cities in Europe, and one of the 11 members of ’The Most Ancient Europeans Towns Network’. This town of 73000 houses the five day long event which attracts millions of visitors in August, ’the Féria’ or ’Feria de Béziers’, the famous days of bullfighting.
Not only because of these reasons, but Béziers have two arenas: One from the Roman era and one built by Fernand Castelbon de Beauxhostes in 1905, in the style of Spanish bullrings.
The fans of beauty will be fascinated by The Fine Art Museum (Musée des Beaux-Arts) which owns a collection of Jean Moulin and paintings from such names as Hans Holbein, Sébastien Bourdon, Géricault, Vincent Van Gogh, Chaïm Soutine and Henri Goetz. The picturesque The Plateau des Poètes, built in 1867 is everything one can wish when it comes to pretty parks: the English style park was made by the Bulher brothers and has statues of poets, along with the monumental fountain of the Titan by Injalbert.
The Saint-Nazaire Cathedral overlooks the city while the Orb Aqueduct (also called Pont-canal de l'Orb or Pont-canal de Béziers) carries the Canal du Midi over the Orb river.
