Alba Lulia: The Heart of a Nation Free Tour
Overview
Once the Roman city of Apulum, Alba Iulia was a center of power and trade, echoing with the steps of legions. Through the Middle Ages and the Habsburg era, it evolved into a jewel of architecture and symbolism, where baroque gates, ancient ruins, and broad promenades blend in harmony.
Inside the citadel, the Union Hall and Orthodox Cathedral of the Reunification honour the 1918 Great Union — the defining moment of modern Romania. Nearby, the Cathedral of Saint Michael, a Gothic treasure, tells stories of faith and resilience that span nearly a millennium.
Today, Alba Iulia breathes new life into its history. Cafés, exhibitions, and festivals animate the fortress year-round, blending the past with a vibrant present. Here, the spirit of unity endures — not as a memory, but as a living heartbeat of the Romanian nation.

On arrival
Please arrive at the bus parking area near the main entrance to the Alba Iulia Citadel (Cetatea Alba Carolina). This is the designated meeting point for the start of the tour. The location is easy to find — just follow the signs for Parcare Autocare (Bus Parking).
To help you spot me easily, I will be waiting with a green umbrella near the main information board at the parking area. From there, we will begin our walk through the citadel together.
Things to note
Arrive 10–15 minutes early to allow time for parking or finding the meeting area. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as the tour includes cobblestone paths and gentle slopes inside the fortress.
The tour takes place outdoors, so please check the weather and dress accordingly.
Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen during warmer months.
Restrooms and cafés are available inside the citadel and at the parking lot.
